Appraisal Institute Candidate for Designation Program

Candidate for Designation Program

Appraisal Institute

MAI Designation

The Appraisal Institute moves forward with new Candidate for Designation Program. According to the Appraisal Institute, becoming a Candidate for Designation will be the path to Designated membership in the Appraisal Institute. The candidate for designation program will be a structured program – similar to an MBA program per the Appraisal Institute website. Guidance and financial incentives for candidates to make progress toward an MAI or SRA designation will be provided. According to Appraisal Institutes’ President Sara W. Stephens, MAI, the program will begin January 1, 2013. Current Appraisal Institute Associate Members signup begins June 1, 2012.

I haven’t seen specifics on what the incentives are, but a more structured less complicated path to being a designated member is needed. The timeline mentioned is also a good idea. I know many who are so close to finishing their MAI designation, yet they’ve been ‘so close’ for years. Certainly the assistance and mentoring with current MAI’s is a must. I’m happy to discuss the process with anyone interested. I hope the new Candidate for Designation Program inspires State Certified General Appraisers to start the process.

See my post on what the MAI designation is and what qualifications you currently need. I have not heard anything on increasing the requirements, but my recommendation to an appraiser who is interested in the MAI designation is always – start now!
