Downtown Jacksonville Bostwick Building – Future?

Bostwick Building

Near the top of the downtown Jacksonville building are the engraved numbers and words “1905 The Guarantee Trust and Savings Bank 1919”. It looks every bit that age and more. It’s a shame it’s in this condition. I always enjoyed seeing the Jacksonville Jaguar mural peering out the windows. MetroJacksonville.com has done a good job with updates over the years on the building. Their article reminded me to take a look before it’s demolished.

I finally stopped by the 7,650 SF building located at 101 E. Bay Street, Jacksonville, Florida today and looked around. Link to google map. The interior is a shell at best. Main problems appear to be the roof leaking, with visible water damage by peeking through the glass door. However, closer inspection looks like the exterior brick walls would need many repairs. There cracks several feet long and areas that appear to be bowed and flexing. Also the roof line along Ocean Street appears ‘wavy’, disjointed possibly as a result of the mortar shifting.

I visited the building interested in historic downtown Jacksonville commercial real estate. I had the preconceived opinion that this historical downtown building needed to be saved. A closer look appears to me that the property simply was not maintained. And without immediate repairs or contingencies the Bostwick Building could pose safety issues for pedestrians or vehicular traffic.
